Silicon germanium (SiGe) has emerged as an important semiconductor technology for mobile communications systems. Current research efforts are looking at ways of optimizing the tradeoffs of combining digital and analog circuits onto a single integrated circuit (IC) platform. SiGe technology provides the ability to reduce the form factor of software controlled radios in mobile communications platforms. As IC technology continues to shrink in size while increasing in performance, the optimization of SiGe technology will have greater influence in the mobile communications market than ever before. This report introduces application design constraints that apply to typical digital and analog circuits and why these constraints have led to digital silicon (Si) technology and analog gallium arsenide (GaAs) technology. This leads to how SiGe addresses design constraints in both of these areas and how to weigh the performance tradeoffs of digital versus analog components in a mobile communications system design.

Operation of SiGe bipolar technology at cryogenic temperatures
The recent introduction of silicon-germanium (SiGe) alloys has proven exceptionally promising for achieving excellent bipolar transistor performance at cryogenic temperatures, while maintaining the cost and yield advantages traditionally associated with silicon (Si) manufacturing. In this paper we review the features of silicon-germanium heterojunction bipolar transistors (SiGe HBTs) which make...
متن کاملSiGe Comes of Age
Since its first technology qualification in 1996 in IBM’s Advanced Semiconductor Technology Center (ASTC), Hopewell Junction, NY, silicon germanium (SiGe) has become the darling of the chip world, with new product and development agreement announcements made on nearly a daily basis. In this paper, we update progress made in SiGe since our 1Q97 IBM MicroNews article [1], tracing a number of busi...
متن کاملGigahertz SiGe BiCMOS FPGAs with new architecture and novel power management techniques
Typical Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are generally used in signal processing, image processing and rapid prototyping applications. The integration of Silicon Germanium (SiGe) Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor (HBT) devices with CMOS allows a new family of FPGAs to be created. This paper elaborates new ideas in designing high-speed SiGe BiCMOS FPGAs based on the Xilinx 6200. The paper ...
متن کاملNpn Review and Trends for the Last Decade
INTRODUCTION The last decade has seen a massive device research effort in Si and SiGe NPN bipolar transistors. The fate of Si technology had already been prematurely declared a few years ago when it was estimated that conventional Si NPN devices would never see their cut-off frequencies go beyond the 5-10 GHz range. Surprisingly, the early to mid 90’s has seen an explosion in Si NPN bipolar dev...

Technical progress in bringing SiGe heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) technology to reality has been exceptionally rapid. The first functional SiGe HBT was demonstrated in December 1987, only fifteen years ago. In this fifteen years, since the first demonstration of a functional transistor, SiGe HBT technology has emerged from the research laboratory, entered manufacturing on 200-mm wafer...
